Moving Items

Move items between locations using the grid or item detail page

Moving items between locations is a common warehouse operation. Beam provides two ways to move items: from the item detail page and from the location page. Both methods use a buffer system that lets you prepare, review, and confirm moves before they are executed.

Moving from the item detail page

The Move tab on the item detail page provides a visual way to relocate items using the location grid.

Step-by-step process

  1. Navigate to the item you want to move and open its detail page.
  2. Click the Move tab. You will see a visual location grid showing where the item is currently stored.
  3. Identify the source location the cell where the item is currently located. The grid highlights cells that contain the selected item.
  4. Select the destination location click on the cell where you want to move the item to.
  5. Choose the quantity to move. You can move all items from the source or specify a partial quantity.
  6. Review the move details in the buffer to make sure everything is correct.
  7. Click Save to execute the move.
💡
The Move tab grid shows color-coded cells so you can quickly see which locations contain the item and how much space is available at potential destination locations.

Moving from the location page

You can also initiate moves directly from the Locations page. This is useful when you want to reorganize items across multiple locations.

Step-by-step process

  1. Navigate to the Locations page and find the source location.
  2. Click on the source cell to view its contents.
  3. Select the items you want to move from that cell.
  4. Select the destination cell the location where you want the items to go.
  5. Specify the quantity to move for each selected item.
  6. Review the move details and confirm.
ℹ️
Moving from the location page is especially convenient when you want to empty a location or reorganize items without navigating to each item's detail page individually.

The buffer concept for moves

Both move methods use a buffer system. The buffer is a temporary staging area where your planned moves are collected before being executed. This gives you a chance to review and modify the moves before committing them.

How the buffer works

  1. Prepare As you select items and destinations, the moves are added to the buffer. No stock is actually moved yet.
  2. Review View all pending moves in the buffer. Check that the source locations, destination locations, and quantities are correct.
  3. Modify If something is not right, you can change quantities, remove items from the buffer, or add additional moves.
  4. Save to execute Click Save to commit all moves in the buffer at once. The stock levels are updated and the moves are recorded in the item history.
⚠️
Moves are not executed until you click Save. If you navigate away from the page without saving, your buffered moves will be lost.

Best practices for moving items

  • Check destination capacity Before moving items, verify that the destination location has enough space. The grid view shows capacity indicators for each cell.
  • Use the buffer wisely Prepare multiple moves at once before saving, rather than saving after each individual move. This is more efficient and makes it easier to review your work.
  • Verify after moving After completing a move, check the destination location to confirm the items arrived correctly.
  • Use scanning for accuracy If available, scan items during the move process to ensure you are moving the correct items to the correct locations.
  • Keep the history in mind All moves are recorded in the item's History tab. This audit trail helps you trace where items have been over time.
💡
For large-scale reorganizations, consider creating a plan before you start. Identify which items need to move, where they should go, and in what order. Then use the buffer to stage all the moves before saving them all at once.
